We have three allotment sites in Fakenham: Greenway Lane, Grove Lane and Rudham Stile Lane and plots are available on all three.
Typical of our allotment holders is Tommy White. He has held allotments on Greenway Lane for about 15 years. He started with just one, handily located behind his house, but enjoyed it so much that now he has three plots together. He grows everything from potatoes, spring cabbages, sprouts, sweetcorn and beans to gooseberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. “We eat as much as we can,” he says, “But when our freezer gets full, we have to start giving it away.”
Pride of place at this time of year are more than 20 giant pumpkins, some of which take three people to lift. Tommy says: “I don’t know how much they weigh because my scales only go up to 12 stone!” As well as sharing them with his family, he often donates pumpkins to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn for Halloween.
He often wins the Best Allotment Award and, despite battling poor weather this year, thinks of it as a very rewarding hobby. “People really seem to enjoy it,” he says. His allotment proves that hard work can yield amazing results.
The smallest available plot is 159.8 square metres and would cost £19.17 per year. The largest is 406.7 square metres at a cost of £48.80 per year. Discounts are available for pensioners. Each plot also requires a £25 deposit which is refundable if the plot is returned to the council in a good state. Keen allotment holders like Tommy find the costs repay themselves many times over with the money saved on fresh fruit and vegetables.
